Written in the wake of Mary Brown Malouf’s sudden death in December 2020, this editor’s letter looks back on fifteen years of working alongside the magazine’s longtime executive editor, from the note that first brought the author onto her masthead to the last issue the two put together side by side. It also introduces a special “Letters to the Afterlife” section, where friends and colleagues from across Utah’s restaurant, arts and media world, including bar owners, chefs, journalists and a tourism director, shared their own memories of Mary’s wit, generosity and outsized presence. It’s a personal, unguarded piece, less a formal obituary than a tribute from a friend and colleague who worked beside her for a decade and a half.
